The Hearing Store

Your hearing test Explained

One simple visit could help you avoid years of frustration. We’ll test your hearing to determine how well you can hear and recommend the best solution for you, and you can count on us to only recommend what you need. We’ll also contact you every 18 months to two years for a hearing check to ensure everything is fine. We are available when you need us, so if you are concerned about your hearing, visit a store.

What to expect in a hearing test.

Everyone’s hearing is different. That is why we use a variety of techniques and cutting-edge technology to customise your hearing care to your specific needs.

Here’s what typically happens during a Specsavers hearing test:

Your first appointment usually lasts about an hour. While we adjust to new social distancing guidelines, please attend your appointment alone if possible.

After asking a few questions, the audiologist will test your ears by playing sounds at various pitches through headphones and asking you to press a button each time you hear a sound. They will then ask you to wear a special headband that uses vibrations to test your hearing ability.

They'll use a tiny camera to examine the health of your ear canals and ear drums, ensuring that sound has a clear pathway through the middle and inner ear structures; they'll even show you what they're seeing onscreen. This will be recorded so that you can keep track of any changes in your ear over time.

If you need a hearing aid, your audiologist will walk you through all of the options available to you. They may also take a mould of your ear canal to ensure that your new device fits properly. This takes five minutes and is totally painless.

Real Ear Measurement accounts for your ear canals' individual acoustic characteristics. A special microphone analyses the sounds produced by the hearing aids in your ear canal to ensure that you are receiving the best sound possible.

In most cases, your hearing aids can be fitted on the same day as your exam. They will be programmed specifically for your needs, and we will ensure that you understand how to use them before you leave the store.

We'll also schedule a follow-up appointment after four weeks to ensure that everything is working properly and to fine-tune the programming as needed. This could be done through our RemoteCare service or with the finetuning app. During your first appointment, your audiologist will go over every detail with you.

If you are over 50, you should have your hearing tested on a regular basis. We recommend that you have one every year if you are over 40 and every two years if you are under 40.

We can provide you with a free comprehensive hearing assessment and discuss your options if you have hearing loss. There is no obligation for you to purchase a hearing aid.

Free hearing services and NHS hearing aids

Our Hearing Centres are NHS-accredited and provide hearing services throughout more than half of England. If you qualify for free NHS-funded hearing aids, Specsavers will provide you with a hearing test, two digital hearing aids, and full aftercare at no cost.
